To Finance Minister: How to Create Monopoly Free Market?

The Finance Minister of Bangladesh, Abul Mal Abdul Muhit recently said in a seminar that the Bangladeshi market of daily commodities is controlled by syndicates who are involve in monopoly business and rising price as they wish. Finance minister accepted that the government does not have any control over market. It is a fact that because of their monopoly people are suffering as they don’t have capacity to buy things because of poverty. Finance minister demanded advice and opinion from people to stop monopoly of the syndicates. So let us understand nature of monopoly and way to stop it.

What is monopoly system?

Monopoly economic market is a market in which there are many buyers but only one seller or a group of sellers making syndicate who have exclusive control or possession over market. The monopolist is the one who hoards the commodities until the price rises so as to sell them expensively such that it becomes difficult for the citizens to buy them. Monopolist creates artificial crisis and then sell the goods expensively. As for the condition of monopoly that it should reach a limit at which it becomes difficult for the citizens to buy the monopolised commodity. This is because the reality of the monopoly is not conceived to happen except in such a situation. If it did not become difficult for the people to buy the commodity then it would not have been gathered or held back to be sold expensively. Therefore, the condition of the monopoly is not only to purchase the commodity; rather it is gathering it and waiting for its price to rise so as to sell it expensively. This applies whether the monopolist compiled it through purchase or from the harvest of his large land because he is the only person to plant such type of harvest, or he compiled it from his factories, as the sole manufacturer. Capitalist monopolise manufacturing a certain thing by eliminating other factories, create shortage in this type of industry and thereby monopolise the market.

Reason behind Monopoly

Capitalism (the system which is adopted in Bangladesh) emphasis on production and capitalist do not think of distribution of wealth. They consider price as the incentive for production and only regulator for distributing wealth amongst the members of society. According to capitalists, the price is the only constraint that forces the consumer in his possession and consumption to accept a limit comparable to his income, and it is the price which restricts the consumption of every individual in acceptance to what his revenues permit. Accordingly, through the rise in price of some goods and drop in the price of others, and in the availability of money to some people and its non-availability to others, the price regulates the distribution of wealth amongst consumers. Thus, every individual’s share of the wealth of a country is not equal to his basic needs, but is equal to the value of the services in which he has contributed in producing commodities and services i.e. equal to what he owns of land or capital. From this principle, which makes the price the regulator of distribution, Capitalism has effectively decided that man does not deserve life unless he is capable of contributing to the production of commodities and services. The person who is incapable of contributing, whether he was born with a physical or mental disability, does not deserve life, and does not deserve to take from the wealth that which satisfies his needs. Also the person who was born strong in body or in mind, and who is more capable of creating and possessing wealth however he wishes, deserves to consume luxuriously and deserves to practice control over others with his wealth. Also the one whose motivation to seek material gains is stronger will exceed others in possessing wealth whereas, the one whose adherence to spiritual and moral values (which control him during the earning of wealth) is stronger, will have less than others in possessions or wealth. This approach excludes the spiritual and moral elements from life and produces a life built upon a materialistic struggle to gain the means of satisfying materialistic needs. Thus money (price) becomes most important matter on Capitalism because it is the regulator of distribution of wealth. Because of their weak understanding of distribution, people spend their effort to earn money anyhow without thinking of morality. This system also allows few stronger people to be rich and majority struggling to survive. Thus in capitalism, rich become richer and poor become poorer. This eventually occurs in all countries which adopt and apply Capitalism.

In a country adopting Capitalism, monopolies has developed because a small group of people i.e. the owners of large oil, automotive, and heavy industry corporations, have come to dominate consumers, reigning over them by imposing certain prices for the commodities they produce. The concept of freedom of ownership which is the core concept behind capitalist economy along with the concept of making the price the only mechanism for distributing wealth, has resulted poor distribution of commodities and services. It has caused Capitalist monopolies in the West to look abroad to other countries for new markets, from which to gain raw materials and to sell their products. As a result, world especially third world suffers from colonisation, economic invasion and regional influence. Thus, the resources of the world are accumulated on this basis into the hands of Capitalist monopolies. All this is due to the false rules and principles established by Capitalism.

Solution to Monopoly

After understanding nature of monopoly, anyone can easily comprehend that Capitalism is the reason for monopoly and syndicate. Capitalism allows a group of powerful people to come together during business and fix prices as they wish because they only have commodities in their hand. Therefore, to stop monopoly, it is important to adopt a good distribution system of wealth. Wealth should not be accumulated in few hands because if few people hold wealth they can create syndicate easily. Good distribution system of wealth will create balance of wealthy people. In such situation creating syndicate is impossible and monopoly does not occur. Even than if anybody tries to monopolies, government must stop him by the force. So, by implementing Capitalism which is devoid of spirituality and morality, it is impossible to keep monopoly free market since capitalism protect interest of capitalists who monopolies the market. Only existing way to stop monopoly is to implement Islamic economic system. Islamic economic system will ensure distribution of wealth as Islam forbid holding of wealth by few and oblige circulation of wealth.

Monopoly is prohibited (Haram) absolutely in Islam without a difference between commodities whether it be people’s necessities or luxuries. It is forbidden in Sharia due to the decisive prohibition of it that came explicitly in various Ahadith. S’aid ibn Al-Musayyab narrated from Mu’ammar ibn Abdullah Al-‘Adawi in Bukhari that the Prophet said: “No one monopolises except the wrongdoer.” Al-Athram narrated from Abu Umamah, he said: “The Messenger of Allah (saw) forbade that a foodstuff be monopolised”. And Muslim narrated through his chain of narrators from S’aid ibn Al-Musayyab that Mu’ammar said: “The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Whoever monopolised is a wrongdoer.” The monopolist describes as a wrongdoer i.e. disobedient. The dispraising in the Hadith by the prophet (saw) indicates that this prohibition is decisive. Thereupon, the Ahadith indicated that monopoly is Haram.

The reality of the monopolist is that he monopolises the market; and imposes upon people whatever price he likes by holding the commodity as a monopoly, so people will be forced to buy it from him at a high price, for it is not available other than to him. Thus the monopolist in fact wants to increase the price for the Muslims, a matter which is Haram, due to what was narrated from Ma’akal ibn Yasar, that he said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Whosoever was involved in any of the prices of the Muslims, so as to increase it for them it would be due on Allah to place him in a great fire at the Day of Judgement.”

Hence, Islamic system will prevent monopoly and will punish those who monopolies. But, a comprehensive and radical Islamic system must be implemented to solve our problems. If Islamic economic system implemented without its basic creed will never work.

Will Finance Minister Listen?

The advice and opinion from an aware citizen to finance minister of Bangladesh is that for solving all our problems, implement Islamic way of life by implementing Khilafah. Islam is the only true system from our creator can be rationally proved that can solve our practical problems. But our rulers have allergy on Islam and hatred for Islam can be seen in their activities. Abul Mal is a minister of government lead by Awami League and Awami League, being a secular political party always found to be anti Islam. Their recent torturing on mass people and Islamic parties made them one of the harshest regimes in history. Awami League by born fond of fascism and they don’t want to tolerate any opinion other than theirs. Mr. Abul Mal while you were talking of monopoly and syndicate, trade minister Faruq Khan was beside you and it is well known that his people are involved in such activities. Do not try to make people fool by speaking nice, stop your own people from doing such activity first. Will finance minister Abul Mal listen to the advice and opinion given by us? Provably he will order his force to find me and torture me for exposing reason of monopoly and giving proper solution.

Understanding Disunity of Muslim Ummah

1. Introduction

When we Muslim started scrutinizing factors of our lacking behind of other nations we have came to some understanding. When our lands are being attacked by foreign nations and occupied one after another and our children being massacred by the imperialists we understand one of the major reasons of our this situation is that we are not united. Although cause to all our problems are much more vast and solution remain to very same reason but after each attack or failure every Muslim come realize need for Muslim unity after understanding Allah’s saying:

“And hold fast all together by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you) and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favor on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love so that by His grace ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of fire and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make his signs clear to you: that ye may be guided". (TMQ Ale-Imran: 103)

In this verse ‘rope of Allah’ means Allah's covenant. And ‘be not divided among yourselves’, orders sticking to the community of the believers and forbids division. Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

It pleases Allah for you to acquire three qualities and displeases Him that you acquire three characteristics. It pleases Him that you worship Him Alone and not associate anything or anyone with Him in worship, that you hold on to the Rope of Allah altogether and do not divide, and that you advise whoever Allah appoints as your Leader. The three that displease Him are that you say, `It was said,' and, `So-and-so said,' asking many unnecessary questions and wasting money.

Yet, as days are passing by Muslims are getting more and more divided. The division is multidimensional. The reasons of these divisions could be many such as languages, ethnicity, nationalism and sectarian beliefs etc. so let us understand reasons and myths behind division of Muslim.

Given false reasons of disunity:

1. Division among Muslim because of Language, ethnicity etc
2. Division among Muslim because of difference of opinion

Reasons of disunity:

1. Division among Muslim because of weak understanding of Islam
2. Division among Muslim because of nationalism
3. Division among Muslim because of foreign Power and influence on Muslim land
4. Division among Muslim because of different political leadership and authority

2. Given false reasons of Muslim disunity:

2.1 Division among Muslim because of Language, ethnicity etc.:

Division among Muslim due to difference of language, ethnicity and culture is considered as an obstacle to Muslim unity. This is so definite that Islam is no stranger to different peoples, customs, cultures and languages. Since the early days of Islam, as the Islamic lands expanded people of different denominations all became Islamic subjects. Islamic rule under the Abbasids reached lands where the inhabitants of other religions clashed with the thinkers and scholars in the conquered territories. It was this clash that resulted in the development of the rational sciences, i.e. the studying of the aqeeda of Islam. The development was also due to the need for presenting the Islamic belief with rational evidences. As a result, disciplines became divided into branches and Islamic disciplines became diversified accordingly. These disciplines dealt with many issues and were enriched every time the conquests expanded further. As a result many Muslims in the state began to devote themselves to the disciplines, sciences, study and research. A multi-faceted Islamic culture took shape within the Islamic lands, so the people dedicated themselves to learning it to elevate the Khilafah. Every scholar, whatever type of culture he or she specialized in, and every writer, whatever their literary approach, and every mathematician, scientist or artisan, would debate and articulate Islam due to this clash. That’s why we see example of scholars like Al Bukhari , Al Tirmidi and Al Kurtubi, scientist like Ibn Sina and Al Razi etc. reached on the top of all other even though none of them were Arab in origin.

Islam came to solve human problems and Islamic System is made by Allah in a way that unifies people of different land, origin, ethnicity and language without any hesitation. Islam does not attempt to unify its followers by blind faiths of nation states by promoting slogans like “glory to the motherland or homeland is above all”. Rather unity of Islam is unity of its aqeeda. Moreover, Islam is not an individualistic religion. Unlike many other way of life, Islam emphasis on collectivity. Maximum rituals of Islam e.g. Salah, hajj etc. are collective rituals. Likewise Islam is not a religion of a set of few rituals. Islam is broad and it is the only true ideology to solve human problems. So along with all other laws, Islam gives importance on Muslim brotherhood and unity. Islam came on a time when Arab used to fight for nothing and they used to kill each other for little reason. Arab used to fight years after years. They were filled with hatred for each other. Islam unified them under banner of Islam. Not only Arabs, non Arabs came under shade of Islam and became one whole body. Allah describes the believers as being brothers. Muslims share the same beliefs, work towards the same goals and share the same code of behavior. Allah says:

“The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy.” [TMQ Al-Hujurat 49: 10]

So, it is definitely false to say division among Muslim due to ethnic or linguistic reasons. These differences were in Islamic society for over thousand years yet they were united.

2.2 Division among Muslim because of difference of opinion:

Difference of opinion in Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) also has shown as a major reason of disunity. So Sunni-Shi’a conflicts and different schools of thought like Jafarari, Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, Hambali etc. are considered as major reason of disunity. This thought is a myth instead of a reason and difference in opinion is not an obstacle of Muslim unity. It is observed that every ideology is united in a basic issue regardless of difference of opinions. In every ideology there exists difference of opinion on solutions built upon the creedal dogmas. In democratic countries, numerous schools of thought have arisen due to differences in interpretation. In the US today we have Democrats and Republicans. In the UK we have Labour, Liberal Democrats and Conservatives. Across the Western world we have neoconservatives as well as libertarians, Fabians, environmentalists and Christian Democrats. All differ in the manner that liberal ideas should manifest themselves but they all have secularism which is the aqeeda of the Capitalist system as their basis. Socialism also had a number of schools of thought built upon their aqeeda. Advocates of Socialism saw the injustice that resulted from the concept of ‘Freedom of Ownership’ and concluded that the difference in private ownership between people was the problem that required a solution. The communist school advocated practical equality in everything and absolute abolition of private property. The agrarian socialists proposed abolishing private property in agricultural land only. Then came a third socialist school of thought known as state Socialism, where private property was transferred to public ownership in the name of public interest i.e. nationalization in every situation where “public interest” called for it. So Islamic ideology is built on its aqeeda that is, “there is no god but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger.”

Now, if we look at this over hyped so called reason of disunity comparing with Islamic history, it becomes clear to us that “difference of opinion” is a myth of disunity not a true reason. Prophet (saw) said:

“Difference of opinion in my Ummah is a blessing”

So, therefore there is scope of difference of opinion in Islam where it is permissible to have two or more opinions. If we read the Islamic history and the development of Islamic Jurisprudence, we will realize that the difference of opinion was existed throughout the Islamic history since the prophets (saw) time and it was never been a real cause of disunity. Although disunity occurred several times because of difference of opinion but they were temporary and always been resolved in short period of time. Sunni-shi’a conflict is not an historical truth (as it shown by oriental historians) The prominent Ahle Sunnah Imams of Islamic Jurisprudence, Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik, Imam Shafi'e and Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal (May Allah shower His mercy upon them) were interconnected and they learnt Islamic Jurisprudence from Imams of Ahle Bait (family of Prophet Muhammad, Peace be upon him). For example, Imam Abu Hanifa was a student of Imam Ja'ffar us Sadiq. Sunni and shia co-exist in same society with harmony over thousand years. They married each other and they had no real problem until imperialists pushed and used both sides after destruction of Khilafah.

So, it is very much clear that difference of opinion is not a reason for disunity while all Muslim believe in same god Allah, same messenger Mohammad (saw), same qur’an and same judgment day. This artificial problem will be solved once a real Islamic authority is re-established.

3. Real Reasons of Muslim Disunity

3.1 Division among Muslim because of weak understanding of Islam:

The weakness that overtook Muslims in understanding Islam in a proper way has leaded a massive disunity among Muslim. Concept of one Ummah seems like no more exits intellectually, although it remains as emotional issue still. So when a new shock is occurs in the Muslim world it shakes Muslim which is not enough to fulfill the requirement.

It is not Islam that is the cause of divisions but the absence of Islam that causes problems. A pertinent example of this is the attempts by the Western world in imposing secularism as the model to deal with the Sunni and Shi’a problem. Such an approach is alien to the people involved in the conflict and rather than solving the conflict it is in fact placing it in the private sphere ensuring it has no influence in polices in the public sphere. The original dispute over the successor to the Prophet Muhammad (saw) can in reality only is solved by assessing the Islamic evidence in this regard, from this perspective only Islam can ever is the solution. The actions of some Muslims in the past against the Prophet’s (saw) family, the actions of Mu’awiyah and history generally are not sources of Islamic jurisprudence and hence cannot be the reference point. The reference point in this case would be the Qur’an and the hadith and naturally different interpretations can occur here, which is the case with all jurisprudence. However, interpretation is not a limitless process and there are rules for interpretation. So, unity can be built on Muslim Ummah by restoring original teaching of Islam. The current generation of Muslim is far away from the original teaching of Islam. That because current generation did not receive any thought from older generation. So they do not hesitate to give up Islam and adopt other ideology. There is a need of elevation of Ummah’s thought like early generations who understood need for unity from the Islam which can be done by implementing Islam in society. Islam has not thought disunity; rather intellectually weak understanding of Islam has leaded this massive destruction. So it is beyond doubt that restoring system of Islam by Khilafah is the only solution to this problem.

3.2 Division among Muslim because of nationalism:

Islam came to dominate over all over the world. It is a universal ideology which unified people of different ethnicity, colour, culture and language under same banner. These issues were never been a problem in Islamic history and nationalism is not related to those. Rather nationalism is a new phenomenon in Muslim lands which is a product of corrupt capitalist system. Nationalism or tribalism is a real obstacle for Muslim unity which needs to be demolished by proper implementation of Islam. Islam obliges Muslim to have a strong brotherhood with fellow Muslim; therefore Muslim must be careful of matter that all Muslims around the globe are our brothers as long as they are strict to the Islamic aqeeda. Muslims are obliged to love fellow Muslim brother’s regardless ethnicity, colour or region. Islam rejects all such types of bond, while capitalist philosophy teaches us to be bonded such. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“He is not one of us who calls for ‘asabiyyah, (nationalism) or who fights for ‘asabiyyah or who dies for ‘asabiyyah.” [Abu Dawud]

We must work for this unity of aqeeda ordered by Allah and this unity will bring our revival. We must understand solution to our problems lies to Islam. Prophet (saw) said:

“The Muslims are one Ummah (nation), there land is one and there war is one”

So, it is very clear that Islamic teaching does not allow nationalism, which is a real source of disunity.

3.3 Division among Muslim because of foreign Power and influence on Muslim land:

In the colonial era colonialists started creating divisions in the Muslim world by establishing ‘small, unstable states’ following their “divide and rule” theory which was to ensure the Muslim world never can unite. France and Britain prior to World War 1 had already carved up the Middle East amongst themselves. They drew lines on paper maps and created Transjordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq and Iran. Pakistan, India and Afghanistan were later created which separated people who had lived for hundreds of years together. Colonial powers still influence and control Muslim lands directly or indirectly which is a big reason of disunity among Muslim.

So, to restore unity it is very necessary to remove their power and influence whether it be direct or indirect from our land which can be done by real Islamic state. Puppet rulers and puppet states had failed to remove foreign power and influence from Muslim lands because of insincerity. So it became a key point for Muslim realization of revival by restoring real authority.

3.4 Division among Muslim because of different political leadership and authority:

Unity in the past was built upon Islam and it turned the Islamic lands into prosperous societies which welcomed all and excelled in various fields. Hence the absence of Islam, which is what the colonialists worked for, is the reason why over 57 nations exist where one nation once stood. So we saw, the British Foreign minister addressing the Prime Minister shortly before World War II:

“We must put an end to anything which brings about Islamic Unity between the sons of the Muslims. As we have already succeeded in finishing off the Caliphate (Khilafah), so we must ensure that there will never arise again unity for the Muslims, whether it be intellectual or cultural unity”.

Difference in political leadership and authority is the sole reason for Muslim disunity. The Ummah globally has clearly seen that the traitor rulers who are appointed by colonialist are not representatives of her. In fact a widening gulf now exists between the rulers and the Ummah. Considering the lengthy period of decline the Ummah underwent she has never been so united. All that remains in the final part of the jigsaw which protects unity is a state.

A government built upon the ideals society believes in, ensures unity is created and protected. The Sahabah dealt very harshly with the Khawarij who introduced foreign ideas into Islam which would have created disunity. In later period, when Salahuddin Ayubi took step to re-conquer Al-quds, prior to it he destroyed Fatimid state that was creating disunity of Ummah. Same way, every time when there was an attempt of disunity Rulers of Muslim took step to bring back unity. Hence, Ummah remain united for over thousand years until colonialists took our land and divided us into small nation states. Without a state it is virtually impossible to have unity. It is a state that brings unity amongst people. As Islamic history has shown Islam has detailed rules for unity and integration and actually has a successful track record of uniting people from different backgrounds. The disunity we see today was created by the West and continues to be fed by them.

So only a global state for Muslim i.e. Khilafah can bring back unity of Muslim Ummah. Disunity occurs due to different leadership and authority but Islam has prohibited more than one leadership for Muslim. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri narrated that the Prophet (saw) said: "When the oath of allegiance has been taken for two Khalifs, kill the latter of them". [Muslim]. And Afrajah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say: "Whosoever comes to you while your affairs has been united under one man, intending to break your strength or dissolve your unity, kill him." [Muslim]

We should remember how the Sahaba remain united after death of prophet (saw). It is true that it is narrated that Al-Habbab Ibn ul-Munthir (ra) said when the Sahaba met in the wake of the death of the Prophet (saw) (at the thaqifa hall) of Bani Sa'ida:

"Let there be one Amir from us and one Amir from you (meaning one from the Ansar and one from the Muhajireen)".

Abu Bakr replied: "It is forbidden for Muslims to have two Amirs (rulers)..." Then he got up and addressed the Muslims. [‘As-Sira’ of Ibnu Kathir, ‘Tarikh ut-Tabari’ by at-Tabari, ‘Siratu Ibn Hisham’ by Ibn Hisham, ‘As-Sunan ul-Kubra’ of Bayhaqi, ‘Al-fasil-fil Milal’ by Ibnu Hazim and "Al-A'kd Al-Farid" of Al-Waqidi]

It has additionally been reported in "as-Sirah" of Ibnu Ishaq that Abu Bakr went on to say on the day of Thaqifa: "It is forbidden for Muslims to have two Amirs for this would cause differences in their affairs and concepts, their unity would be divided and disputes would break out amongst them. The Sunnah would then be abandoned, the bida'a (innovations) would spread and Fitna would grow, and that is in no one's interests".

So it has happened to be disunited when we chose to have more than one leader by the force of colonialists. So we have to learn from mistakes work for bring back our unity.

Significance of Rabiul Awwal

“O Prophet! Truly We have sent thee as a Witness, a Bearer of Glad Tidings, and Warner, and as one who invites to Allah’s (grace) by His leave, and as a lamp spreading light (Siraajan-Munir).” [TMQ Al-Ahzab 33:45-46]

Rabiul awwal is the 3rd month of Islamic calendar. The month of Rabiul Awwal has special significance in the history of Islam. There are 3 main significant issues we have in Islamic history in this month of Rabiul Awwal. They are mainly:

* Birth of Prophet (saw)
* Hijra to Madina and establishment of the Islamic state (known as Dar al-Hijra and Khilafah after the death of the Prophet).
* Death of Prophet (saw) and selection of 1st Khalifah Abu Bakr Siddiq (ra).

So, to understand the significance of this month we have to look deep into Seerah of Prophet (saw). Because by scrutinizing these incidents we have lot of things to follow especially in our age of decline.

Birth of Prophet (saw)

This is the month in which our beloved Prophet (saw) was born who liberated the people from darkness (days of jahilliyah) to the light of Islam. We are the best nation because we are the Ummah of Muhammad (saw) who was the master of messengers and we have one degree higher grade than other nations, because Allah (swt) says,

“You are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin al ma’roof and forbid al munkar, and you believe in Allah…” [TMQ Al `Imran 3:110]

Allah (swt) praises us as khaira Ummah, as we are the Ummah of Mohammad (saw) who enjoins good and forbid evil. Many Prophets of Allah wanted to be a part of this Ummah, though Allah only granted Isa (as). Luckily we are part of his Ummah. The Islamic Ummah are obliged to love their Prophet (saw) more than their life and it is directly linked to the Iman. Allah (swt) says,

“Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much” [TMQ Al-Ahzab 33:21]

النَّبِيُّ أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَأَزْوَاجُهُ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ

“The Prophet is closer to believers than their ownselves and his wives are their (believers) mothers” [TMQ Al-Ahzab 33:6]

Anas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

«لا يؤمن عبد حتى أكون أحب إليه من أهله وماله والناس أجمعين»

“None of you can believe until I become more beloved to him than his family, wealth and all the people.” (Agreed upon).

These ayah and hadith are interrelated. Allah is ordering us to follow Prophet (saw) and Prophet (saw) said that none of us have Imaan until we love him more than anything of us. Our question is how we can follow someone or love someone if we don’t know about his life? That is why knowledge of Seerah is important to every Muslim.

Brothers, you may say we follow Prophet (saw) but unfortunately we follow him only in few aspects. Let us compare some of our daily routine,

* We follow him when eating food but do we follow him in how to interact with the opposite sex?
* We follow him in prayer but do we follow him when we trade?
* We follow him in fasting but do we follow him on ruling?

If we judge carefully may be we will see lot of contradiction in our life. So let us know about our beloved Prophet (saw) studying authentic Seerah and act according to it throughout our life.

The Prophet (saw) was born in a notable family of Quraish (Bani Hashim) in the year of 571 C. E that was 12th of Rabiul Awwal, Monday. Both his father, Abdullah Ibn Abdul Muttalib, and mother, Amina Bint Wahab, were well-known individuals for their attractive personality. Prophet (saw) lost his father before he was born and he lost his mother at the age of 6. So his grandfather Abdul Muttalib looked after him. He got married to Ummul Mu’min Kadija before 15 years of his Nabuwwah. Eventually He got revelation from Allah through Jibreel at the age of 40.

PHASES AND STAGES OF THE CALL OF TAWHEED

Muhammad’s (saw) Call could be divided into two phases distinctively demarcated:

1. The Makkahn phase: nearly thirteen years.
2. The Madinese phase: fully ten years.

The Makkahn phase can be divided into three stages:

1. The stage of the secret Call: three years.
2. The stage of the proclamation of the Call in Makkahh: from the beginning of the fourth year of Prophethood to almost the end of the tenth year.
3. The stage of the call to Islam and propagating it beyond Makkahh: it lasted from the end of tenth year of the Prophethood until Muhammad’s (Peace be upon him) emigration to Madinah.

In Makkah initially the Prophet (saw) was propagating Islam secretly until the ayah was reveled commanding Prophet (saw) for open proclamation. So there after, Prophet (saw) and his cultured Sahaba went out in public and propagate Islam in various ways. They were tortured and some of them were killed but nothing could stop their message to Islam that “there is no god but Allah”. They accepted this single god in every field of their life i.e. Ibadat and muamalat (transactions). So we see many ayah like:

تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ

“Perish the hand of abu Lahab” [TMQ Al-Masad: 1] or:

قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ (1) لَا أَعْبُدُ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ

“Say: O ye that reject Faith! I worship not that which ye worship” [TMQ Kafirun: 1-2]

They were challenging the rulers and system of the time. The oneness of Allah does not mean only in worship but also in ruling i.e. every sector whatever you can think of. This is the true meaning of shahadah. (This is a separate discussion; we can have it some other time)

In Makkah, Prophet (saw) was looking for nussrah (protection) from different tribes. Finally the two tribes of Madinah gave the Nussrah – The Aus & the Khazraj and Prophet (saw) establish the Islamic authority in Madina.

Hijrah

The Prophet (saw) made hijrah to Madina and he (saw) reached there on Friday 12th of Rabiul Awwal. From the very first day he (saw) established the authority for Islam. The Establishment of Islam in Madina was the first day of joy for the Muslims. The Messenger of Allah was greeted by a huge number of its people, Muslims, polytheists and Jews alike. They were all eager to witness his awesome presence and he soon came to be surrounded by the Muslims who were all anxious to serve him and to offer him comfort and hospitality. They were ready to offer themselves to him and to the deen he had brought to them, they were ready to sacrifice their lives in the way of the Message of Islam.

Allah’s Messenger implemented Islamic laws from the very first day he arrived in Madinah and began to structure it by forming the society on a solid foundation as well as by gathering the appropriate force in order to be able to protect the State and convey the Message. With this accomplished, he could begin to remove the material obstacles that stood in the way of the spreading of Islam.

The Prophet (saw) was the ruler of Madina (the first Islamic state) until his last day in duniya. He established a strong state that was a superpower for over 1000 years and it rules continued until 1924. Eventually the Khilafah or the Islamic state established by Prophet (saw) himself was destroyed by the hands of kuffar and the sunnah of our beloved Prophet (saw) was abandoned.

Death of Prophet (saw) and selection of 1st caliph Abu Bakr (ra)

The Prophet (saw) died on Monday, 12th of Rabiul Awwal. Instead of burying Prophet (saw) the Sahaba (companions) did certain actions which give us a lesson to learn and act. Generally if a Muslim dies, it is obligatory for Muslims to bury him as soon as possible. But the Sahaba did not bury the Prophet (saw) immediately; rather they involved themselves seriously in selecting the Khalifah for Muslims, who is the one to take care of the affairs of the Muslims. For this they gathered in the courtyard of bani Saida and after the discussion of two days they came to a conclusion that Abu bakr (ra) should be their Khalifah. After appointing the Khalifah, the Sahaba’s then made preparation for the burial of Prophet (saw). By their actions we come to know the importance of appointing an Imam for the Muslims within three days and it should be dealt as life or death issue like the Sahaba did. This is an Ijma of sahaba but now we are living without an Imam who takes care of the affairs of the Ummah for more than eight decades. So all the problems we face today is due to the one reason that is we forget the issue which was dealt by the sahaba’s as vital i.e. the Khilafah. We will definitely revive by establishing the Khilafah rashidah, if we have firm belief in Allah (swt) and follow the sunnah of Prophet (saw).

Lessons of this glorious month

Lessons we got from this month is mainly to have love for Allah and his messenger (saw) more than anything else. But unfortunately today many people claim that they love Prophet (saw) without understanding of true meaning of love for Allah and his messenger. So maximum time they end up doing wrong actions like bid’a and even worst than it. The classical scholars of Islam like Al-Azhari said: “A servant’s love for Allah and His Messenger means obeying them and following their command.” Al-Baydaawi said: “Love is the will to obey.” Az-Zajjaaj said: “Man’s love for Allah and His Messenger is to obey them and to accept what Allah (swt) has commanded and the Messenger of Allah (saw) has brought.” Love for Allah and his messenger (saw) has greatest of reward in Islam. Allah says:

“Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you have delight in are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause, then wait until Allah brings about His Decision (torment). And Allah guides not the people who are Al-Fasiqun.” [TMQ At-Tawbah: 24]

Anas (ra) narrated:

“That a man asked the Prophet (saw) about the final Hour. He asked: when is the final hour? He said: What have you prepared for it? He said: nothing, but I love Allah and His Messenger. He said: you will be with the one you love. Anas said: nothing made us so overjoyed more than when we heard the Prophet saying you will be with the one you love. Anas said: I love the Prophet, Abu Bakr and ‘Umar and I wish to join them because of my love for them even though I have not done as many good deeds as them.” (Agreed upon).

The Sahaba had Prophet (saw) with them. So they were loving him, obeying him and sacrificing all of their wealth for him and for the cause of Islam. Anas (ra) said:

“I have never witnessed a day better or brighter than that day on which the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) came to us; and I have never witnessed a more awful or darker day than that one on which the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) died on.”

We don’t have the messenger (saw) with us. But we have his sunnah with us. Our true love for him will be following his sunnah completely in our actions, protecting his honour which is insulted everyday by the kuffar. The way to do that is restoring the complete system of Islam by restoring the Khilafah. Muslim reported on the authority of al-Araj on the authority of Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (saw) said:

"Behold, the Imam is but a shield from behind which the people fight and by which they protect themselves."

Ragging/Hazing Or Decent Interaction?

'Ayisha (ra) reported that the Prophet (saw) said:

“Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in all things. He grants on account of gentleness what he does not grant for harshness or anything else.”

I want to discuss about a current ongoing process in campuses and job places. We are involved in many actions without proper justification from Islam. We do many things just because we have fun on it. Ragging and hazing are prime of those actions. Did you ever think is it allowed in Islam to involve such an action like ragging or hazing? As a Muslim we have to think all of our actions will be accounted and we will be punishing if any of our action contradicts Islam.

Allah Says:

“And follow not that of which you have no knowledge; for every act of hearing, or of seeing or of (feeling in) the heart will be enquired into (on the Day of Reckoning)” [TMQ Al-Israa: 36]

Ragging is term normally used in India, Pakistan and some other countries."Society Against Violence in Education" gives the definition of Ragging as such:

" Ragging' means the doing of any act which causes, or is likely to cause any physical, psychological or physiological harm of apprehension or shame or embarrassment to a student, and includes– (a) teasing or abusing of playing Practical joke on, or causing hurt to any student. or (b) asking any student to do any act, or perform any thing, which he/she would not, in the ordinary course, be willing to do or perform."

Similar action in west is define as "Hazing". Hazing is defined by the FIPG (Fraternal Information Programming Group) as:

"Any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of alcohol; paddling in any form; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or any other such activities carried on outside or inside of the confines of the chapter house; wearing of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with fraternal law, ritual or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution."

I’m giving you some data which explains that many students ware victimise in India because of such action. Ragging causes physical and mental harms to a student. Worst effect of it may lead to suicide.

* Amit Sahai was a student of NIT Jalandhar, Punjab and he committed suicide on October 11, 2005 by jumping in front of a speeding train. He blamed nine senior students of NIT Jalandhar in his suicide note for having had mercilessly ragged him.

* Durgesh Shukla hanged himself from a ceiling fan on September 18, 2007. He blamed seniors in his suicide note.

* Manjot Singh, an MBBS student, committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance on August 8, 2007 .

* 18 year-old Chetan Raj committed suicide on September 20, 2007. His body was found hanging from the roof of his lodge room. He had already complained to his parents that he was being ragged in his college.

* A first year engineering student, C Abraham, hanged himself to death on December 14, 2005 at his residence in Hyderabad. In his suicide note, he mentioned that he was not interested in studies. His parents suspect that his suicide to be a result of ragging.

* A 19-year-old first year engineering student, Anup Kapoor, committed suicide on September 19, 2002 by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Kanpur. In his suicide note, Anup said that he was going through mental agony due to the sexual harassment by second-year students of the institute (Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow) in the name of ragging.

* Azad Nair was a 22 year old cadet at the Officer's Training Academy(OTA) in Chennai. He had hanged himself from the fan of his room on 5th November, 2006. Prior to his suicide he had told his brother Soumendu over telephone that he was being ragged and humiliated at the OTA and he had pleaded to his father Padmanabhan Nair to rescue him from the OTA.

So let us understand the topic from the Islamic view point.

Actions Involve during ragging

Insulting

When students take ragging from a junior they speak in insulting manner.

Abu Hurayrah (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“Truly Allah detests the obscene and foul-tongued.”

Reported by Ahmad with a reliable chain of transmitters. Reported by at-Tirmizi who said the hadith is hasan sahih. Also reported by al-Haakim and Ibn Hibbaan in his Sahih.

‘Ayisha (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“Be calm, O 'Ayisha! Take care of kindness, and beware of harshness and bad language.”

Pride

Students are often too proud as they are senior. Pride is only for Allah

Al-Bukhari and Muslim reported on the authority of al-Haritha b, Wahb al-Khuzaa'I that the Prophet (saw) said:

“Shall I not inform you about the inmates of Hell? It is every violent, impertinent and proud person.”

Making Fun

It is so obvious that senior student’s demand singing, dancing, acting from a new comer so that they can make fun.

Al-Hasan (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“Verily those people that make fun of people – for them a gate of Jannah will be opened. It will be said to them: Come (and enter). That person will come with all of his anguish and depression – but when he gets close, the gate will be closed in his face. Then another gate (to Jannah) will be opened and it will be said: Come (and enter). So that person comes with all of his anguish and depression. But when he gets close, the gate will be closed in his face. This will keep happening to him until it gets to the point where it will be said to someone: Come (and enter), and he will not come out of despair from ever entering paradise.”

Oppression/Injustice

Oppression doesn’t only mean physical torture; mental torture is also a kind of oppression. Pulling out of shirt by force is simplest mean of torture.

Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) sent Mu’az to Yemen and said:

“Fear the du’a of the oppressed for between it and Allah there is no barrier.” (Agreed upon)

How should we behave with a fresher?

Look at Other Muslim as brother

Allah says:

“The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy.” [TMQ Al-Hujurat: 10]

In the hadith of ‘Umar it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor deserts him. Whoever helps to remove the hardship of his brother, will have his difficulties removed by Allah in this world and in the Hereafter.”

Muslims are strongly tight up with bond of imaan. Therefore a Muslim must loves another muslim. If we look at many Quaanic ayah and sayings of Rasulallah (saw) we will see that Islam teaches us to love our brothers, hide their faults, standby their side when they need, protect them from enemy and be like a mirror to each other. Allah says:

“The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is exalted in power, wise.” [TMQ At-Tawbah: 71]

And, on the authority of Abu Dardaa` (ra) who said that the Prophets (saw) said:

“Whoever defends his brother's honour, Allah will protect his face from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.”

So, it an essential part of our aqeeda that we must love our muslim brothers from our heart. The hadith of Anas (ra) reported by al-Bukhari states that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“None of you will taste the sweetness of Imaan until a man does not love a person except for Allah’s sake.”

Similar hadith is mentioned by Huthaifah (ra), the Prophet said:

"Whoever does not take an interest in the affairs and problems of the Muslims, he is not of them. And whoever’s state is such that, each morning and evening, he is not loyal and earnest to Allah, his Apostle, His Book, the Islamic ruler and towards the Muslims, as a whole, he is not of them."

Also at-Tabaraani reported with a trustworthy chain of transmitters which is classed as hasan ahadith on the authority of Zayd b. Thabit that the Messenger of Allah (saw):

“Allah continues to help a servant so long as he goes on helping his brother.”

So, therefore we must be careful of matter that all Muslims around the globe are our brothers as long as they are strict to the point “la ilaha illahu mohammadur rasullah”. We must love our brother’s regardless ethnicity, colour or country. We must not oppress or humiliate any Muslim brother by the means of ragging. We should help the fresher so that Allah becomes pleased on us. Neither we should look think us superior as we are senior. We must work for unity of Muslim and this will lead us to Jannah.

Be nice to a non Muslim for the sake of Dawah

Quran instructs Muslims to treat non-Muslims courteously in a spirit of kindness and generosity, given they are not hostile towards Muslims. Allah says:

“Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes – from dealing kindly and justly with them. Indeed, God loves those who act justly. ” (Al-Mumtahanah 60:8)

Al-Qarafi, a classical Muslim scholar, describes the depth of the meaning of “dealing kindly” referred to in the above verse. He explains the term:

“…gentleness towards the weak, providing clothing to cover them, and soft speech. This must be done with affection and mercy, not by intimidation or degradation… Also, praying they receive guidance and [thus] join the ranks of the blessed with external reward, advising them in all wordily and spiritual matters, protecting their reputation if they are exposed to slander, and defending their property, families, rights, and concerns. Assisting them against oppression and getting them their rights.”

Divine commandments to treat non-Muslims in this manner were taken seriously by Muslims. They were not just verses to be recited, but Divine Will to be acted upon. The Prophet (SAW), himself was the first person to put the divine commands into practice, followed by his caliphs and the general population of believers. The life-story of the Prophet of Islam gives many instances of his kind, tolerant co-existence with non-Muslims. Some of his neighbors were non-Muslims and the Prophet would be generous towards them and exchange gifts. The Prophet of Islam would visit them when they fell sick and do business with them. There was a Jewish family he regularly gave charity to and the Muslims after his death maintained his charity towards them.

In another instance, a Jewish man named Zayd bin Sana came to the Prophet of Islam to reclaim a debt. He grabbed the Prophet by his robe and cloak, pulled the Prophet close to his face, and said, ‘Muhammad, are you not going to give me my due? You and your clan Banu Muttalib never pay debts on time!’ Umar, one of the companions of the Prophet, got agitated and said, ‘Enemy of God, am I really hearing what you just said to God’s Prophet. I swear by the One who sent him with truth, if I were not afraid that he would blame me, I would have taken my sword and cut your head off!’ The Prophet looked calmly at Umar and censured him gently:

“Umar, that is not what we needed to hear from you. You should have counseled me to pay my debts in time and asked him to seek repayment in a respectful manner. Now take him, repay him his debt from my money and give him an extra twenty measures of date.”

The Jewish man was so pleasantly surprised by the Prophet’s behavior that he immediately declared his acceptance of Islam!

The companions of Prophet Muhammad followed his example in how they treated non-Muslims.

Advice for the Muslims who are involve in such actions

Islam does not teach you to be harsh and unjust. Again Islam tells you be friendly with people. So we should receive a new comer with happy face. We should help him as he needs help. Also we should introduce ourselves to them and get their introduction in a proper manner.

Speaking good is a charity

Hurayrah (ra) narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

“Speaking a good word is charity.”

Smiling is a charity

Abu Zarr (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“Your smiling in your brother's face is charity.”

Advice to the juniors

'Amr b. Shu'ayb (ra) narrated from his father whose grandfather narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“He is not one of us who shows no mercy to our younger ones and does not acknowledge the honour due to our elders.”

Reported by Ahmad, at-Tirmizi, Abu Dawud and al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad. An- Nawawi said the hadith is sound.

Ibn 'Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“The blessing is in your elders.”

Reported by al-Haakim who said the isnad is sound according to the condition of Bukhari. IbnHibbaan reported it in his Sahih and Ibn Muflih said in al-Adaab the isnad is jayyid.

May Allah give us opportunity to behave in the way pf prophet (SAW).
